History
The
3rd conference was held at Gauhati on 10th and 11th September,
1973 at Gauhati Medical College under the leadership of Dr.
Deepali Dutta. Dr. Ajita Chakraborty was the President and Mr.
C. S. Teron ,
Hon'ble Health Minister was the inaugurator of the conference
. Dr. D.N. Nandi presided over the symposium - "Problems of
organisation of Mental Health service with reference to Eastern
States".
The 4th conference was held at
Burdwan University Medical College, Burdwan on 5th & 6th
October, 1974. Altogether 11 papers were presented the
scientific session. In this Conference Dr. G. C. Boral was
elected as the Co-ordinator. Later the post of Co-ordinator
was named as the Hony. Secretary. Dr. G. C. Boral Continued in
the post of Hony Secretary till 197. During that period the
constitution of the zone was adopted and the activity of the
zone gradually expanded . The Annual conference of the zone
was held regularly at various places of the zone under the
leadership of stalwarts of the zone who received national and
international recognitions for their contributions in the
field of mental health.
In 1975, Dr. B. Dash took the
initiative to organize the 5th East zone conference in S.C. B.
Medical College, Cuttack, on 20th and 21st September ,1975.
Dr. A. B. Dutta took the trouble to frame out the constitution
and by - laws which was approved after little modifications.
Dr. R. K. Gupta took the
responsibility to hold the 6th conference of the zone at
Ranchi on 11th and 12th September, 1976. Dr. L.P. Varma was
the president and Dr. R. B. Davis was the chairman of the
reception Committee. In this conference the A.G.B. confirmed
the rules and regulations and by laws.
In the year 1977- the conference
was held at Assam Medical College , Dibrugarh under the
dynamic leadership of Dr. I. Dutta on 24th and 25th September
. Dr. R.B. Davis presided over the function and Dr. N. Zaman ,
Principal of Assam Medical College was the Chief Guest.
The 8th East Zone Conference and
first national symposium on Psychiatry in industry was held in
September, 1978 at Bokaro Steel City. Dr. A.K. Deb was the
president in the conference. Dr. M. Agarwal was the organizing
secretary and Dr. K.G. Grewal was the chairman of the
organizing committee.
The 9th Zonal conference and the
2nd national symposium on Psychiatry in industry was held in
September,1979 at Rourkella under the leadership of Dr. P.K.
Nanda.
But since 1980 to 1982 the Zonal
conference could not be held due to some unavoidable
circumstances. With lots of efforts of a few members -
particularly Dr. G.C. Boral, Prof. G. Sen, Prof. Amit
Mukharjee and Dr. M. M. Mazumdar, the 10th conference was held
in Calcutta after a lapse of 3 years in 1983.Dr. Deepali Dutta
was the President in this conference .
The 11th conference was held in
Patna under Dr. R. P. N. Singh as President as well as
Organizing Secretary . Dr. S. A. Hasib was the Chairman of the
Reception Committee. Since then the annual conference of
eastern zonal branch in being held regularly except the year
1991 and 1993.
Though it started with only a
few members but due to the sincere efforts and vision of the
founder members, the branch has been able to grow tremendously
to occupy a prestigious position in the service of mental
health. The membership strength of the branch also increased
significantly over the last few years.
